Adam Norsworthy
Continuing our series of interviews with The Mustangs key figures, we chat again with Adam Norsworthy, The Mustangs' lead singer and guitarist is this month's exclusive website interview. Speaking to Adam this month was Publicity Agent & Promoter, Mariana Tapp.
Q) Hi Adam, rumour has it, a brand new Mustangs album is on its way?
A) Well it’s a bit premature to say that exactly. But yes, we’ve been writing a lot recently, especially Ben and me, and I think it’s fair to say that we won’t have the usual two year gap between albums this time. Maybe Summer 2009.
Q) You're probably one of the most hard working blues/rock band in UK today. How would you like your fans to reciprocate and even contribute towards The Band's future success?
A) Hmmm….well I think by turning up to as many shows and buying as many CDs as possible! But seriously, the blues community is a fairly small but a dedicated one, so word of mouth goes a long way. If people like The Band, they can always recommend us to new venues or festival organizers. That always seems to help.
Q) It's almost traditional for an artist, especially a blues one, to come with a tragic story. What's yours?
A) My pet rabbit died in mysterious circumstances when I was 5 years old (laughs). Look, blues is an expression; it doesn’t have to be tragic but if you can channel any kind of feeling to help get the emotion across, you’re doing your job. I don’t fake anything.
Q) What was the highlight of the summer for The Mustangs?
A) So many again… seeing the new album out there and available… the Swanage festival was a great weekend... on a personal level it was awesome seeing Neil Young play live again! It’s just always fun being with The Band and sharing the music.
Q) From all the greats, past and present, who would you most like to be identified with?
A) Genuinely, none of them. We’re not even a traditional blues band... we write our own stuff, have our own sound. People have mentioned Zeppelin, The Who, Feelgood, Weller... and if they want to compare us with anyone, that’s up to them, but I wouldn’t dream of doing it.
Q) Are you returning to some old favourite venues?
A) When, this Autumn? I don’t think so. We want to move on and will be stepping away from a lot of the pub shows we have done over the last few years. We are traveling up and down the country much more now, meeting new people and playing in some great blues clubs, so I think that’s what we will be concentrating on for a while.
Q) What are you most excited about in the coming year?
A) Pretty much just what I mentioned – new venues and festivals are top of the list for 2009, but also the prospect of a new, great record coming fairly soonish…so much to do!
Q) What keeps you so focused and driven in your music?
A) The love of it. It’s a passion that never leaves you - so much you become a slave to it at times, I’m not sure it’s easy to explain if you don’t have it…but sometimes you don’t even feel as if you chose to do it, it chose you... (laughs). There’s nothing like playing well at a packed gig, or writing a great new song. Nothing, really.
Q) Are you superstitious?
A) I touch wood out of habit, but apart from that, not at all, no.
Q) So no lucky stones hanging around your neck?
A) No rabbit’s feet, no crosses, no nothing… that sounds like a blues lyric! (laughs)
Q) Who would you like to credit for Helping The Mustangs this year?
A) Well, lots of people – we’ve done a lot of great radio - Xan at original and Julie at Pure…Tony & Sue for their great photos once again, and everyone who has come to the shows and bought the album. Then there’s the usual suspects - Alan at BluesMatters, Iain at Stiff, and your good self. We have a nice team around us.
Q) Nothing Stays The Same is said to be The Mustangs best album yet. What music of your own would rate as best?
A) Solo stuff? I dunno, I don’t try and rate anything, I just sit back and enjoy what I can…I like both my solo albums and I’m working on the new one right now. It should be ready by November.
Q) Can you tell us more about it?
A) It’s very different from The Band again. People who know my solo stuff know it’s softer, more personal, and this is much the same..maybe even more so... I like these songs, but they were never right for a Mustangs album, so I’ll keep them for myself!
Q) Do you have any anxieties?
A) Not really, no. Well, none out of the ordinary..paying bills, meeting deadlines, finding time etc. etc. but I wouldn’t really call those anxieties…
Q) Lager or bitter?
A) Ah, now we are down to the serious questions! I am growing to like bitter more and more – Ben is a bitter man, and I’m slowly coming round... but on a hot day in the sun there are times when only an ice cold lager will do.!
Q) Football or rugby?
A) (Laughs!) Now anyone who remotely knows me can tell you the answer to that one..football all the way..I hate rugby. I’m a Liverpool fan..
Q) Now one for the ladies - what size feet are you???
A) God, someone else asked me that in one of these interviews years ago….I’m not sure I answered, but I’m size eleven. Why are you giggling?? (laughs)
Q) And finally, our traditional last question – what is your favourite Mustangs song?
A) Um, I guess I’m not allowed to say any of the new ones we have written for the next album – which are awesome, by the way! – so at the moment I’ll go for Looking Down The Well, as it’s so much fun to play live, and people seem to really love it. So can I go now?? (laughs)
Okay, thanks Adam!
