In an overcrowded market you’ve got to have something special to stand out. Four piece outfit The Mustangs operate in the blues/rock field and by all accounts are a particularly fierce live act… not difficult to imagine when you give their latest album a spin. Split Decision clocks in at just over 32 minutes but it’s 12 tracks offer up plenty of evidence as to why they are so highly touted by those in the know.

The South Coast based band formed back in 2001 and have been garnering good reviews in the South, including some Festival appearances (Boogaloo, Swanage and Guilfest). The line up is Adam Norsworthy, Derek Kingaby, Ben McKeown, Jon Bartley. This, their third album, contains a dozen originals. The style is blues-rock, blues influenced music with a high-energy input.

Released on the the UK's largest dedicated blues label, Blues Matters, The Mustangs are a south coast based, four man line up with a formidable live reputation. Frontman Adam Norsworthy handles lead vocals, guitar and keys, alongside the harp of Derek Kingaby, drummer Jon Bartley and bassist Ben McKeown. Commendably and democratically, the group share the paper and pen duties and all four have contributed to the writing of the album's wide-ranging material.

On an all-original twelve song set The Mustangs run the gamut of head down, thrash it out blues-rock, and material which falls more into the straight ahead singer/songwriter rock arena. If this kinda thing shakes your particular plum tree then you'll definitely need to check it out. Nicely arranged and recorded.

This is the third album from this four-piece band who have played together for two years, with a unique sound comprising traditional blues blended with rock traditions, to form The Mustangs' distinctive sound. Adam Norsworthy (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Derek Kingaby (blues harp), Ben McKeown (bass guitar) and Jon Bartley (drums), shared song-writing duties, and the strong music influences of Led Zeppelin and Neil Young permeate this studio-album from the off.

"I think we consciously wanted to move away from any blues clichés... we didn't want to be singing songs about porches, rocking chairs, black cats or mojos. There was a very clear attempt to make a record that was a modern blues album, with no pretences or tired old imagery that you hear people constantly allude to in their songs. As such, it's a rock album with blues overtones. It has also has very clear lyrical themes – the loss of something loved and cherished through indecision and irresponsibility..."
