Derek Kingaby
This month we talk again to The Mustangs' blues harp player Derek Kingaby. He gives us tantalising snippets of info on the new album and talks about The Band’s Summer ahead...
Q: Derek, it's been almost 3 years since your last interview on this site - can you possibly sum up those last 3 years in a sentence?
Hard labour, but a labour of love!
Q: This year the band made it to France for a festival - looking back how was the experience?
Super, hyper, demonsiellement bien! Cest le pied!
Q: Are there any plans to play other parts of Europe soon?
Volgende Jahr - Nederland
Q: So on to the new record. How is it coming along?
Machtig. Bien - or, in English, mighty good! All songs are now up and running and, from a personal perspective, give me the opportunity to deliver a stronger harp sound and some different styles of play. I just hope when we record them that comes through.
Q: Has the band settled on a title for the new album yet? Can you tell us?
The jury is still out. 3 to 1 in favour of * ****** ******* and 1 for *** ***** **** Some convincing remains to be done.
Q: How about your own input into it, what can you tell us?
Less written input from me this time around, but plenty of harp. Probably reflects whats been or has not been happening in my life over the last year.
Q: What are your main ambitions for the new album?
To go platinum, but would settle for gold. It's up to the fans as I can't rely on my family buying any copies, They seem to think they should get freebies. Outrageous! You would think they would support a struggling musician!
Q: You have some big festival shows coming up at Cambridge, Swanage and Colne. What can the punters expect?
I have never been a particular fan of festivals as whenever I see the coverage on the TV too many bands seem to be self indulgent, bland and boring. 10 minute solos etc. The Mustangs will never deliver anything other than a dynamic set of original numbers. I am excited at the prospect of playing to large audiences at the big festivals and learning whether what we do is well received.
Q: The back end of 2009 looks very busy with these big shows and the new album. What are your Summer holiday plans?
Having just returned from Ben's marriage to Adela in Almeria, S Spain - a truly amazing event - Cathedral Ceremony and Reception in the Bull Ring - hundreds of guests, dancing horses ( the real thing, not The Mustangs) and staying on for a week to visit the Sierra Nevada and Granada, a further summer break seems unlikely.
Q: Can you ever switch off from The Mustangs?
I don't think I ever do. I love our music. It is reminiscent of so much of the music I grew up with. It's great to perform and see people enjoying what we do. Perhaps most important is to do it with 3 other guys who feel the same way and enjoy each others company both on and off stage.
Q:What does the King Bee do to relax when he is not performing?
I'm not good at relaxing. Sport used to fill a huge amount of my time, less so now, other than as a spectator. Too much TV drives me nuts. Documentaries/Biographies always interest me. Work still keeps me busy. And of course playing the harmonica.
Q: And our regular final question - what's your current favourite Mustangs song?
To play live - She Wants More (on the new album), and to listen to - Nights Like Those (Nothing Stays the Same). Of The Mustangs, I think I'm probably the one that takes most from the Lyrics.
Thanks Derek.
