Blues Matters Review - June 2008

I missed these guys at a Blues event about a year ago, thinking that they were just another run of the mill pub Blues band. Well, if it was the same band, I made a big mistake! This is the band’s second album for the BM! Label, and their fourth overall, and all thirteen rocking blues numbers are self-penned, performed with skill, flair and a true feeling for the music they so clearly love. This certainly isn’t the same old twelve-bar blues; interesting arrangements, Derek Kingaby interspersed harp work, and a good vocal mixture, certainly offer something different.

No two tracks followed anything the same (heck, maybe that was the inspiration for the album title? ), as the band showcase influences from 60s British Blues/pop bands and more introspective singer/songwriters of the time, but with a contemporary pop sensibility you’d expect from an indie chart band of today. Frontman Adam Norsworthy is an intelligent songwriter, and thoughtfully – you could say confidently – all of the lyrics are featured in the CD’s booklet (with so many of today’s bands having so little to say, this is becoming an all too rare occurrence on rush-releases in an overwhelmed music industry).

As the album closes with the raucous title track, I was left to ponder whether this outfit has the potential to change how British Blues is perceived and received – and I certainly won’t make the same mistake next time the are playing near me!
